The monochrome pattern can be a simple way to protect horses by helping to prevent flies from landing on their bodies. Layered black lines on a grey background act to create an optical illusion in the eye of a fly. It breaks up the shape of the horse, so insects cannot identify it as a target.

This technology is based on research into the monochrome lines of free-ranging zebras and how they confuse insects.
